Sonya Lee Barrington began using the medium of quilts as her means of expression in 1968. She has been included in many solo and group exhibits, both juried and invitational. They include Fresno Art Museum, CA; Renwick Museum Shop, Washington, D.C.; Spencer Art Museum, KS; California Crafts Museum, CA; Arvada Center for the Arts, CO; Bedford Gallery, CA; Yeiser Art Center, KY; Oklahoma City Art Museum, OK; Museum of Craft and Folk Art, CA and New England Quilt Museum, MA. Her quilts can be found in many private collections as well as the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles; Museum of the American Quilter’s Society and the International Quilt Study Center & Museum.


A sought after teacher and lecturer on her subject, her teaching has brought her to Australia and New Zealand as well as all parts of the United States. She was a faculty member in the Textile Arts Department at City College of San Francisco from 1975 to 1993 and has presented workshops through the Penal Art Project/Arts in Corrections, CA.


She was juried in as a Master Member of Baulines Craft Guild in 1985. It is a California based non-profit association dedicated to the advancement of fine craft through education and the preservation of the craft legacy within contemporary culture.


In 2008 she was interviewed for the SOS (Save our Stories) by a representative from The Alliance for American Quilts. All interviews, which are “...an oral history project to record the stories of this nation’s quilters.” can be accessed online at: www.centerforthequilt.org.


Interviewed (by Nancy Bavor) in October 2009 for her University of Nebraska Masters thesis project on the California Art Quilt.


She did a segment for “The Quilt Show” (view online) with Alex Anderson + Ricky Tims. It was viewed in June of 2012 and addressed “working with Wool and Silk” (not at the same time).

A woman of many interests, Sonya Lee Barrington produced a line of hand-dyed and textured fabrics which she used in her work and now concentrates on very graphic bold patchwork using Silk Dupioni and a large body of both functional and decorative work which uses Repurposed/Recycled Wool.
